In 1987, the Acoustic Energy AE1 shook the hi-fi world: a compact monitor that matched the dynamic range, clarity, and bass depth of much larger loudspeakers. The AE1 became a fixture in studios and audiophile installations around the world.

To mark the 40th anniversary of this groundbreaking model, Acoustic Energy is launching the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition, which brings this legacy into the present with new technology and timeless design. Since all original parts have long since ceased production, the loudspeaker has been completely redesigned with great care to preserve the characteristic sound and familiar design of the original: a high-mass, rigid, straight-sided cone driven by a powerful motor, housed in a small, sturdy, and heavy cabinet with classic double front ports, combined with a metal dome tweeter.

A completely newly developed tweeter with a larger 29mm coil supports a slightly larger aluminum dome for less distortion due to a larger radiating surface. Like the original, the tweeter is ferrofluid cooled and damped for higher power, more dynamics, and less thermal compression.

Drivers

The new woofer has been specifically developed to match the characteristic sound of the original. The slightly larger cone meets the modern 125mm standard and, thanks to the larger radiating surface, offers slightly higher efficiency, less distortion, and more air displacement. The cone itself is further reinforced with a thick, hard anodized ceramic layer on both sides.

Crossover

Inspired by the luxurious 'Signature' version of the original loudspeaker, the crossover uses low-order filters and high-quality components for a very natural, 'lively' dynamic sound. The result is a warm, natural midrange, good bass weight for its size, forgiving highs, and exceptional punch across the entire range.

Cabinet / Casing

Finished in ten layers of high-gloss black lacquer, the cabinet is tuned to the characteristic sound of the original AE1. The cabinet features the RSC material also used in Acoustic Energy's higher-end models: by increasing cabinet stiffness, the sound of the original, concrete-clad cabinets has been approximated without the manufacturing disadvantages.
