About the Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 – Black Oak – Bookshelf Speaker:

The ultra-compact speaker in the DIAMOND 12 series, the DIAMOND 12.0 features the same technology as its larger siblings, but is designed for hi-fi systems with a small footprint, or even as a high-performance, compact satellite speaker in a home theatre system.

The DIAMOND 12.0 features a powerful 100mm (4″) Klarity TM- driver with a bass performance that belies its small footprint, while the excellent 25mm (1″) woven polyester dome tweeter delivers open and smoothly extended high frequencies.

Clarity creates focus

NEW Klarity™ cone material, formulated from a blend of polypropylene and mica, adds stiffness to reduce flex, enabling a lightweight cone with high stiffness, low coloration, and lightning-fast response.

Low-key color and expression with the Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 – Black Oak – Bookshelf Speaker

The Klarity™ cone features a low-damping surround, achieving both low coloration and expressive dynamics. By simulating a wide variety of cone shapes and adding ribs for further bracing, a flat response curve was achieved without resorting to a strong damping surround, thus achieving the ideal balance.

A magnet of forces

A precision-engineered magnet system with an aluminum compensation ring minimizes the effect of inductance variations as the voice coil moves. This contributes to the absence of distortion and intermodulation generated by the motor system.

A voice coil out of this class

The voice coil is wound on a high-strength epoxy/fiberglass bobbin, highly unusual for speakers at this price point. This has the advantage of not adding eddy currents and providing greater power handling than an aluminum bobbin, while also being much stiffer than the Kapton type typically found in this price range.

DIAMOND highlights

The 25mm dome is made of a woven polyester film with a high-loss coating to deliver open and smoothly extended high frequencies. The magnet system and baffle are optimized for wide dispersion and uncompressed behavior. The baffle is flat, exposing the dome as much as possible; only a very short duct on the baffle compensates for the acoustic load and improves SPL (sound pressure level) measurement.

A crossover of style in the Wharfedale Diamond 12.0 – Black Oak – Bookshelf Speaker

The crossover network uses an acoustic LKR 24dB topology. This includes air-core inductors, the type more commonly found in high-end speakers, selected because they produce the lowest distortion of all inductor types. Because the coil's resistance is higher than that of a standard laminated steel or ferrite core inductor, the magnetic structure of the mid/bass driver has been modified to compensate, resulting in fast, clean bass without inductor distortion.

Firm and honest

The DIAMOND 12.1's rear-ported cabinet is precisely sized so its internal volume works in harmony with the drive system to deliver the desired sonic performance. A multi-layered sandwich design dampens the cabinet's distinctive sound characteristics. Even the resonance properties of the adhesive between the layers were measured to determine the optimal combination.

Brace yourself

Inside the cabinet, Intelligent Spot Bracing connects opposing walls with a specific shape of wooden bracket to achieve optimal reduction of cabinet resonance. These brackets are precisely modeled using computer simulation to improve upon the common figure-of-eight bracket, which can simply transfer resonance from one wall to the other.
